The City of Vernon was incorporated on September 18, 1905 as the first exclusively industrial city. The 5.2 square mile city is five miles south of downtown Los Angeles. 

Per the City's Charter, Vernon's City Council is composed of five members, each elected to a five-year term. Voters elect one City Council Member the second Tuesday in April of each year.
