The Vernon CommUNITY Fund Grant Committee meets on the third Wednesday of the last month of every quarter (February, May, August & November) at 10:00 a.m. in the Council Chamber located at Vernon City Hall.

Leticia Lopez, Chair

Juliet Goff, Vice Chair

Juliet Goff is President and owner of Kal Plastics; a Vernon contract manufacturer specializing in custom heavy gauge thermoforming and proprietary industrial-grade material handling containers. She has been with Kal Plastics since 1990, learning the business from the ground up after graduating from UCLA.

Originally located in Gardena, Kal Plastics acquired a Vernon competitor in 1997 and consolidated all operations here. Juliet's active involvement with the Vernon Chamber of Commerce started in 2009 when she was recruited to the Executive Committee; she served as Chairman in 2012 and continues to serve on the Executive Committee.

Juliet was heavily involved with the AB46 battle. She spent countless hours lobbying elected officials, locally and in Sacramento, in addition to playing a significant leadership role in the good governance efforts that followed. This effort, and commitment to insure a better Vernon for all, continues today with her new role as the Business Representative for the Vernon Community Fund.

Outside of Vernon she serves on the Thermoforming Division Board for the Society of Plastics Engineers. As a young professional she served as a Chairman and Board member for the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce and its Foundation. She is a graduate of the Riordon Volunteer Leadership Development Program where she received training in non-profit governance. She has served on the Southeast Educational Fund, the Executive Board at her daughter's co-op nursery school, and presently as a parent leader at her daughter's public elementary school in Pasadena.

Michael Gaviña, Committee Member

Michael Gaviña is DF Roasters, LP, Chief Financial Officer since 2015. In addition, he is the Purchasing Director at F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc.. He is responsible for overseeing the pricing of raw materials and managing inventory levels. He comes from a long line of coffee producers and roasters; growing up Michael always knew he wanted to continue in the family tradition. Representing the fourth generation of Gaviña's coffee roasting legacy, Michael discovered his passion for coffee while spending summers learning about the family business by working alongside his father, Pedro Gaviña. He first joined the FGS 2002 as a buyer in the Purchasing Department.

Since receiving his Q Grader License in 2008 he also works as a resident Q Grader to ensure the excellence of each bag of coffee. He routinely roasts small batches of coffee to help develop new coffee blends.

Michael is the current Vice-Chair of the National Coffee Association. The NCA represents over 90% of the coffee sold in the United States. He is also a member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America and, the Roasters Guild. He contributes his time to the community in which the Plant is based by serving as a commissioner for both the City of Vernon's CommUNITY Fund and Green Commission. Locally, he serves on the Board of YMCA. Michael is actively involved in promoting sustainability in the coffee industry. Michael also serves his community as a board member of Latino Alumni Association (LAA) of Loyola Marymount University, and serves on the Board of Regents of Loyola Marymount University since 2015.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Michael holds both a Bachelor's and Master's in Business Administration from Loyola Marymount University.

Julia Juarez, Committee Member

Julia Svetlana Juarez serves as District Director for State Senator Ricardo Lara. Ms. Juarez's passion for service has manifested through more than 20 years of experience working with elected officials and nonprofit organizations throughout the State of California. A graduate of the Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE) Leadership Institute, she knows first-hand the power of collaboration and servant leadership. Prior to becoming District Director for State Senator Ricardo Lara, she was Director of the Southern California Region of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, where she raised more than $2 million new funds for scholarships for local students pursuing a higher education. She found her calling while working as Press Secretary for Former Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, where she worked on Spanish language media outreach as well as working with local nonprofit organizations to fill the service gap of in the 46thAssembly District. Ms. Juarez's community service has included serving as a board member of the Lynwood Education Foundation where she helps to raise funds to improve the quality of education in the district. In her free time, Ms. Juarez volunteers her time consulting with nonprofit organizations on issues of communications, fundraising and programming. Ms. Juarez holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Political Science as well as a Master's Degree in Leadership and Organizational Studies.

Steve Froberg, Commissioner

Commissioner Steven Froberg has been a resident of the City of Vernon since 2008. Commissioner Froberg works for the Medical Board of California as a regulatory Inspector investigating violations and enforcing compliance of the rules and regulations governing the practice of medicine in the State of California. His current term expires August 10, 2017.
