The City of Vernon Public Works Department offers a streamlined approach to permitting for new development. One counter serves as the central location to process permits and answer questions regarding building codes, zoning codes and work in the public right of way.
Consistent with the City's goal of providing streamline services, the City has consolidated four divisions of the City pertaining to community development and the maintenance of the public infrastructure into one department. The consolidation of these divisions permits the coordination of projects and programs to promote consistency, efficiency and proper customer service to the community.
Your feedback is very important to the success of our department. Please take a few minutes to tell us about your experience with the Public Works, Water and Development Services Department by filling out our Customer Evaluation form here.
The Public Works Department consists of the following divisions:
Public Works: The Public Works division is responsible for maintaining the City’s owned infrastructure including streets, sewers, storm drains and buildings. This section is responsible for maintaining the City’s fleet and warehousing City supplies.
Planning: The Planning division oversees that all private development is performed in accordance with the City’s general plan and zoning ordinance. This section is also responsible for processing applications for variances from the zoning code and conditional use permits to ensure any impact to the community or environment from these operations are properly mitigated.
Building: The Building division is responsible for ensuring that all construction within the City is performed in accordance with the California Building Codes and amended by the City. Additionally, this division is also responsible for code enforcement ensuring that properties are being maintained in accordance with City regulations.
Water: The Water division is responsible for providing and recycling potable water service to the majority of our community via a network of reservoirs, wells and piping systems.
These divisions working in partnership provide a one stop shop for the development community. The integration of the various sections permit the transfer of information between the various sections in an efficient and effective manner allowing the department to provide the quality of service that the community has come to expect.
