Plan Check & Inspection Services

The Fire Prevention Division provides comprehensive fire plan check and inspection services program. These services apply to both new construction and existing occupancies throughout the City of Vernon. All businesses in the City are provided an annual fire prevention safety inspection.


All fire protection related construction work shall conform to the 2016 California Fire Code (CFC) as amended by the City of Vernon Ordinance No. 1237. Ordinances amending the CFC are available on the Codes and Standards pages of this web site, and at the City Building Department counter.

Permits Required
A permit is required for installation of new fire alarms, changing existing fire alarms, installation of fire sprinklers, installation of fire suppression systems, removal of hazardous material tanks, installation of hazardous material tanks, storage of hazardous materials, mixing or blending of hazardous materials, high pile storage, installation of protector wire, etc.

All contractors working in the City of Vernon are required to have a City Business license. For more information please contact the Business Services Division at extension 270. Contractors are required to have a current California state license   (C 7, C-10 or a C-16) to work on fire protection systems. Plan Requirements

  • Shall be a minimum 11" X 17" on (ledger size) papers.
  • Foursets of plan drawings are required.
  • Drawings shall be to scale; a north arrow should always be included on the plans.
  • Shall be sufficient clarity to indicate the location, nature and extent of the work proposed.
  • Shall show in detail that the project will conform to the provisions of the applicable fire codes and ordinances.

    Note: All development or major projects and plans with calculations will be sent out to an outside consultant for review.

    Initial Plan Submittal Requirements
  • Completed permit application.
  • Plan check fee to be paid upon submittal.

Plans can be submitted to the City from 7:00am until 5:00pm Monday through Thursday at the Fire Department counter, located on the west-side of City Hall.

Submittal of Plans and Specifications
Plans and specifications will be reviewed for code compliance. Plan check turn-around time goal is 2 weeks (80% of the time). Other Departments may need to plan check your plans, the City will route a set of plans to each of the various City agencies that are required to review your plans.

Re-submittal Requirements

Written response to plan check corrections, reference to permit/plan check number. Four sets of revised plans shall be re-submitted. Re-submittals to the City's outside fire consultant shall be clearly indicate all revisions on the plans by clouding and delta and shall provide writtendescription of the changes upon re-submittal. Re-submittals for the City's outside consultant shall be directly between the outside consultant and the permittee.
