Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response and Information

City of Vernon Statement on COVID-19 Cases

The City of Vernon has a significant number of essential businesses that must continue to operate to support critical infrastructures. As such the City has taken proactive measures to share relevant COVID-19 information, including CDC recommended guidelines, with business operators to ensure the safety of the general public as well as employees that serve these essential services.

Since early April, the City of Vernon has engaged with several businesses reporting employees testing positive for COVID-19. As the media has reported, the most significant quantity of cases was reported by the Smithfield food processing plant where 153 of 1847 employee tested positive for COVID-19 over the last two months. It is important to note that of the 153 employees that tested for COVID-19, more than 40 have returned back to work. It is also important to emphasize that the positive results reported have taken place throughout a 60-day period and not identified solely within recent weeks.

To monitor and address the potential spread of the virus in Vernon facilities, the City issued a notice to businesses in early April to report the number of employees that have tested positive for COVID-19. The City's mandatory reporting requirement was a key factor for identifying facilities with COVID-19 clusters that may have otherwise gone undetected. The City has worked closely with effected businesses to ensure that CDC recommended guidelines were followed and appropriate mitigation measures were implemented.

The City of Vernon's Health Department, which has the requisite staff and expertise, will continue rigorous inspections for food safety operations under its jurisdiction, and the City will continue to support the USDA and Cal OSHA with employee safety and all other matters within their respective jurisdictions. The City is entirely invested in the health of our community and committed to continuing support for all of the businesses, agencies, and organizations involved in managing the global COVID-19 crisis on the local level.

The City of Vernon will continue to monitor and respond to COVID-19 positive cases and coordinate with other agencies to mitigate the spread of the virus.
